Innovative Sámi musicians
The choir genre is new in Sámi music and there are few Sámi musical work made for choir. Therefore Sámi Jienat is focusing on getting choral music composed for choir. In the years the choir has existed, we have been pioneering in this work. The two main types of music Sámi Jienat has worked with and developed is joik and hymns. In connection with a hymn project from 2003-2005 about 20 different Sámi hymns were arranged for choir, directed by Liv Rundberg. They have been released on our CD “Sálmmat Sámis”. Related to the work with yoik, the choir has cooperated with the well-known Sámi composer and musician Frode Fjellheim. Music Nomads Since we are a choir from several countries, we do not have a regular place to meet. The members meets on average 2 week-ends every six months for rehearsals at several locations in Sápmi. Kautokeino, Karasjok, Inari, Karesuando, Kiruna, Tromsø and Hetta is our most popular venues, but vi have also met in Lakselv, Utsjok, Jokkmokk, Alta, Bjerkvik, Snåsa. Most often we hold concert venue in connection with the rehearsals and sometimes we put the rehearsals in connection to concerts we are invited too, as for example Riddu Riđđu, Márkomeannu, Ijáhis Idjá and the Sami National Day around in Sápmi. Want to join? We are a mixed choir and members of all ages. We are open to all who want to sing choral Sámi music, therefore we have no entrance exam. It is a benefit that one has knowledge of Sámi music, culture and language, but there are no requirements. We encourage all Sámi who like to yoik and sing to contact us, youth are especially welcome. And like all the mixed choir are struggling with, we only have a few male voices. There is room for many more! Join us and our journey around in Sápmi, in music, geography and friendship. We promise you great experiences! Contact us here. |
