The project's background
In the 1970s-1980s, started a Sámi political and cultural awakening that had never happen before in Sámi history. This movement is often called the ČSV era - after three letters in the Sámi alphabet. The initiator of the ČSV movement Anders Guttormsen wrote that ČSV has this purpose: Live the clear Sámi spirit!

There has been great development in Sápmi after that time. The most important happening is the establishment of the Sámi Parliaments in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The ČSV spirit is still alive today.

The music has been - and is - an important arena for Sámi political and cultural activity. The aim of the ČSV Sámis project is to highlight how yoikers, singers, copywriters and musicians have participated in and contributed to Sámi awakening and identity building, and how young Sámi wanted to take back what they have lost. Sámi popular music is also special and interesting because:

- Traditional joik is adapted to modern music instruments
- The modern popsongs get features of yoik

Sámi Jienat's idea is to choose a certain selection of songs/yoiks in the field of pop music from the 1960s to the present and arrange them for choir singing. We have engaged Halvdan Nedrejord as music manager and choirmaster. Sámi Jienat aim to convey this part of Sámi cultural history to the public by holding concerts in 2022 and 2023.

The project is funded by the Sámi Parliaments in Sweden and Norway.

Stay tuned!

It has long been a wish among Sámi Jienat's members to be given the opportunity to present the great diversity in joik and singing from the different Sámi areas. And now the time is here! The yoik is strong and vibrant in the North Sámi area, but yoiks and songs from South Sámi, Lule Sámi and especially East Sámi areas are less represented in the Sámi music world. There are many unknown vocal treasures around in Sápmi and we hope we can get to look up these gems, share them with you and let them shine again. Not only will it be a musical delight for both choir and audience, but it will also be a way to preserve and promote different joik dialects and singing traditions.

Sami Jienat is an inter-Sámi choir working across borders with members from all four countries. This expertise in language and culture among choir members is a huge advantage when we look for yoik in the different areas. The conditions for succeed should be perfect. With this project, we wish to present and perform good music together with expanding our knowledge about joik and its history from these areas. This educational and enlightening effect we think will be all to the good, for both Sámi and non-Sámi, and help to develop and expand the Sámi music world.

This project "Yoiks from Sápmi" started in December 2013. During this time we will have rehearsals where we invite joiking expertise from these areas to teach and guide us. We also give concerts from our regular repertoire as well as samples of our new project. We end the yoiking project with concerts during 2018

We wish all our members welcome to a new project. And for the new members; now you have an exellent upportunity to join in to the adventure with Sámi Jienat! Welcome to you, too. Contact us here.
