A resume, 2003 - 2013
Our first yoik project took off in May 2003 with composer and musician Frode Fjellheim as head of project and conductor. The project turned out to be a both funny and educating journey that among other concerts resulted in our performance at Barents International Choirfestival in Tromsø October 2003.

The year after we started with our Sámi hymn project with Liv Mæsel Rundberg as leader and conductor. We participated and performed at the first Sámi Church-days in Jokkmokk, Sweden, in August 2005. Traditional hymns sung in different Sámi languages such as South Sámi, Lule Sámi and Inari Sámi in addition to North - or Central Sámi. Many of us, as well as the congregation and the audience, were moved to tears. It was a strong and heartfelt experience.  A cd called "Salmmat Sámiid" was produced in 2005.

A lot happened that year! Incredibly enough the choir was invited to participate at the enormous 46664 - Mandela concert in Tromsø June 11th 2005. This concert took place at a big flat area in Tromsdalen, now named the Mandela Plain. Imagine us there backstage waiting with Annie Lennox, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, Brian May from Queen, Peter Gabrial etc. Åivuoi, we were exited!

Nelson Mandela arrived and so did the midnight sun. During sound check the night before it was heavy rain and the fog hung thick down the mountains. "We are going to yoik away rain and fog!" I said; the British sound check boss did not believe us...The weather turned out just amazing June 11th and we sang and yoiked in front of 18.000 - 20.000 people in the sun. Later that night we yoiked backstage in the Green Room - when we stopped Annie Lennox acclaimed: "Don't stop! Don't stop!" What a great experience; man, we were happy.

The second yoik project with Frode Fjellheim, and Snorre Bjerck, begun in 2006, this time a much more innovative and experimental project. It was fun and exciting and Frode encouraged and challenged us; it resulted in a breathtaking yoik-concert for a big audience at Easter Music Festival in 2007 in Guovdageaidnu. We were 46 at stage in addition to Frode and Snorre. The response was amazing and people still remember that concert we even been asked to do it again. The journalist in Altaposten threw 6 dices.

August 7th 2008 eleven Sámi Jienat members left for Stockholm to live at Af Chapman, the boat - and the motel at Skeppsholmen. For three weeks we should eat, sing, yoik and sleep there - and perform. The occasion was an enormous vocal, artistic and musical peace- and reconciliation project called Vox Pacis, with Swedish Gunilla Nordlund and Estonian Veikko Kiiver as project leaders. We had been invited to participate and very exited we flew to Stockholm. Most of us used out summer vacation to do this and we certainly did not regret that. It turned out to be an indescribable magic and wonderful journey in different cultures' musical and vocal expression, both modern and traditional.

Our first performance came very sudden upon us; we were told that we were to perform with TIPA, Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, and not the least - Dalai Lama's monks! The performance was to take place at Ethnographic Museum August 9th, the International Day of Indigenous People. In the kitchen at Af Chapman we put together a program of Tibetan opera and dance with yoik and the Gyoto monks' sacred throat singing. This became the beginning of new friendships and the Tibetan and the Sámi kept together the rest of the time at Skeppsholmen.

After two weeks of intense rehearsing we were ca 235 singers and yoikers from 15 various cultures standing in the Blue hall in Stockholm City Hall. In addition to group performances we performed the great Peace Cantata "A Challenge to Humanity", text written by Sigrid Kahle and music composed by Ylva Q. Arkvik. It was an unforgettable and powerful experience that we all carry further with us. National borders became insignificant; an experience we all felt deeply one of the last nights we sang together after concert. We had all been invited to celebrate the 25th birthday of Zew from the Israeli choir from Tel Aviv, among us were the men from the reknown choir Anchis Chati from Tblisi in Georgia. The war between Russia and Georgia had been going on full scale the whole time and there had been no communication between the members of this choir and the Russian Orthodox choir from Estonia. But this night we were to see and feel the two groups singing together, side by side, with their arms around each other; it brought tears in our eyes, goose bumps and smiles at the same time. It felt magic and made such impact! Singing together can 'dissolve' invisible but strongly felt and experienced borders...

Autumn 2008 we started to rehearse a Sámi yoik suite composed and conducted by Bernt Mikkel Haglund; with this we have performed several places in Sápmi in particular in small villages that not often are frequented with such visits. That autumn we participated in "The whole Norway sings", and had an improvised and funny performance with Åse Kleveland in the Big Goahti in Karasjok. We were also invited and performed at the openings at both the Swedish and the Norwegian Sámi Parliaments and yoiked for Crown Princess Victoria and King Harald V.

October 2010 we started working with our Áillohaš project which we will perform at FinnFest USA 2013. This was named Rohkos Eatnamii - En bønn for jorda - A Prayer for the Earth and the first time it was performed was at the Riddu Riđđu festival July 22nd, a day that a few hours later should become a fatal and cruel day.

Sámi Jienat has also performed Rohkos Eatnamii in Kiruna, Lakselv, Alta and Tromsø.  We are now preparing to go to Houghton/Hancock, Michigan to perform for Finnish and Sámi immigrants and descendants and Native Americans who live in the area named Copper Belt and Keewenaw, Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior. And we are so looking forward!
