A borderless choir
Sámi Jienat (Sámi Voices) project choir was founded in 2002. The members are Sámi, who are the indigenous peoples of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. With approximately 50 members in all ages, the choir is not only the largest but also the only Sámi choir in the world that works across borders as one unit. And of course, we sing in Sámi language. Yoik, the oldest surviving vocal music expression in Europe is traditionally an a capella vocal art and usually performed solo or with a couple of yoikers. Choir singing is not a traditional Sámi music form. Sámi Jienat presents a new genre where the traditional Sámi vocal art expression yoik is used in a new setting and becomes choir yoik. Sámi Jienat brings the ancient voice into modern times and creates music you’ve never heard before. The choir is also performing Christian hymns and contemporary Sámi music. Sámi Jienat have members from all over Sápmi. We work across the three borders that have separated Sami apart and given us four different nationalities, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Russian. This is not problem-free, with regard to administration, financing, rehearsals and language. But we have decided that this should not be a barrier to meet and together do something we really like. It is also an important and honorable mission to bring Sami music, both traditional and modern, out to the world. Sámi Jienat are good cultural ambassadors and represent some of the diversity of the Sami culture, for example in music and national costumes. When the choir stand together in concert, with Sami costumes from their respective areas, with beautiful silk shawls, glittering brooches and belts, they are quite remarkable. And when you also hear traditional Sami music from across Sápmi performed by some of our best yoikers, side by side with contemporary Sámi music in a genre you haven't heard before, it's an experience you will never forget! Sámi Jienat has performed at several prestigious events, such as:
