Sámi Jienat to USA, June 2013
Sámi Jienat have received an invitation from FinnFest festival in Hancock, Michigan USA and are now getting ready for the exciting journey overseas.
The choir has prepared a performance and concert consisting 11 newly-arranged songs, yoiks and poems of Áillohaš - Nils-Aslak Valkeapää's - works. The concert is called A Prayer for the Earth. The choir has had four intense weekend sessions during the fall 2012 and spring 2013 rehearsing for the concert. The next and last rehearsal before they leave to FinnFest will be in Enontekiö 3-5th May 2013. Áillohaš was well-known in the northern part of USA, especially in the Scandinavian environment there and among the local indigenous population. In the area where the festival takes place are many descendants of Sami from the entire Sápmi (northern Scandinavia). Valkeapää traveled in his time over there to present and promote Sámi art and culture. Sámi Jienat will now travel to USA in the same spirit and share the common heritage of the Sámi with the descendants there.
Our concert performance A Prayer for the Earth will be performed at least three times at different venues connected to Finn Festival. In addition, fragments from the performance will be included in the various events related to the festival. Sami Jienat members consider this opportunity to reunite with the emigrants for unique and important. We look forward to meet the Sámi and Finnish population over there and assume that it will be a very interesting culture meeting. The festival held 18th - 24th June in Hancock, Michigan USA, is arranged by Scandinavian emigrants, and encompasses both Finns and Sámi. They write about themselves:
